Yes hardware VSS is faster but at the time I was using DPM with 3PAR both the hardware and software VSS had issues (you'll find some threads on here by me regarding them). I believe patches have since resolved the problems but I left the environment where DPM was being used so I've not had a chance to revisit using DPM with 3PAR but glad to hear your experience is good.

SAN backups, hmmm, if your DPM storage pool is also on the 3PAR why doesn't ODX kick in to keep the data transfer within the array?

No, my DPM is using a large, locally attached disk array right now.

We do have large near Line drives in our 3PAR. I bought them for short term snapshot storage using RMH....but if RMH proves to be unusable...I may export that out to the backup server...........but I do not think keeping backups of the SAN inside itself is a good idea.

Soon we will be receiving a nice HP StoreOnce appliance to hold that data...de-duplicated and replicated to another StoreOnce in a remote site....I'll see how that goes :-)

Yes you can't just have the one storage pool on the same SAN, that would be a risk, but one of DPM's best features is its replication. I used to backup to the DPM server and then replicate of to another at the DR site and also a central DPM server which had loads of DAS on it. Worked well but if you are getting your StoreOnce then that will do the same thing, but you might still have the problem of backing up over the LAN. Still, if you have a separate backup network or 10Gb (?) and you have a decent backup window that might not even be a problem.

Thanks for the tip.

I have not tried replication in DPM yet....I am very new to DPM, actually.

As for separate backup network....I do not have one yet....we do have a couple of nice 48port, 10Gb switches on order and multiple 10GB NICs for every HV server. So yes, 10GBe is our future.

I am a little old school when it comes to storage networks...I like FC. We have two 16GB FC switches for the SAN here.... the HBAs are still 8GB though. Interestingly, 16GB HBAs were not available when we bought this SAN, but the switches were :-)


Going back to the topic..........I have still not heard back from HP tech support about RMH :-(
